Day 1 :
Pick up from Auckland City accommodation at 8.30 am. Travel along the Seabird Coast to Miranda Shorebird Centre, home to many migratory birds. Continue on through Thames, down the coast road to Rapaura Watergardens, a wonderful combination of waterfalls, ponds and gardens.
In historic Coromandel town ride aboard the narrow gauge train at Driving Creek Rail and hear about the reforestation programme in place here.
Walk the easy track to see the majestic 309 Kauri Grove. Continue on to Whitianga and stay next 2 nights.
Accommodation :
Aotearoa Lodge, Racecourse Rd, Whitianga quiet rural location, close to beach & town, self service breakfast, restaurant dinner, inviting guest lounge, welcoming hospitality.
Day 2 :
Guided full day walk across undulating terrain, through native bush including stands of regenerating to mature kauri , tanekaha & tawa forests. Coastal walk around the shore line to Te Karo Beach & Sailors Grave just north of Tairua.
[ In the event of conditions not being suitable for this particular walk, a very good alternative of a full day’s walking including other beach & bush locations is substituted. ]
Day 3 :
Depart Lodge at 8.30 am for walk to Cathedral Cove, across grassland high above the ocean, through an ancient puriri grove & native bush to this secluded bay. Informative commentary of Maori & European history & local information.
At Hot Water Beach paddle your feet in natural hot water pools dug in the sands beside the ocean at low tide.
Depart the Mercury Bay area for return to Auckland via Tairua. Views of Pauanui from Mt Paku. Taste award winning cheeses at Matatoki Cheese Farm.
Return to Auckland approx. 4.30 pm.
